Elephants, N°167 P. 30

African éléphants are very big.
They are the biggest living animals on land!
They use their long trunks to do all kinds of things

Where do they live?

On  the Savannah
(grassy plains)
in Africa

What do they eat?

Leaves, fruit, roots...
They are herbivores
(plant-eaters).

How big are they?

They are much
taller than
one  person.

This little elephant calf lives with its mother and other females.
They go to the river to drink every day. The calf has fun sucking up
the water with its trunk and blowing it into its own mouth !

(calf plu.--->calves
Young animal for elephant, cow, whale, giraffe,)

The littleelephant loves bathing in the river.
If it puts head underwater, it can still breathe through its trunk...
a bit like a snorkel.

After being in the water, the éléphants have a lovely dust bath.
The calf copies its mother. It picks up earth with its trunk and
blows it onto its back . Yhis gets rid of biting insects.

It is no problem finding juicy leaves to eat when you have a trunk.
If the leaves are too high up, then ...snap!
Just break off the branch!

The calf trumpets to call its mother. PWAAA!
It cannot make a very loud noise yet but its mother hears it.
She makes a real racket when she answers!

The elephant calf snuggles up to its mother.
It wants a cuddle so its mum strokes it with her trunk...
